Good artwork is essential to producing a high quality magazine that will be pleasing to the eye of the reader and the eye of your advertisers. The graphics guidelines below will make sure that any digital artwork is submitted properly. Many of your clients will not have digital artwork, please try to use the following criteria for submitting artwork for us to scan or reproduce. Photos can be submitted digitally and should be shot at the highest resolution the camera allows. They can be submitted on a CD, Zip disk, via email or FTP site or on any of the major photo cards from the camera. Photo prints can be submitted, NOT printed off an inkjet printer. Art or photos from a web site are usually not at a resolution that will allow us to print them clearly.

We CANNOT accept files built in MS Publisher or CorelDraw for printing. We will need to re-build these ads and they should be saved as a JPG so we can view them in order to rebuild, in addition any artwork used in these files will need to be sent separately following the standards below:

Graphics Guidelines for Hometown Values Magazines:

We print at 150 LPI. We produce our magazine on a Macintosh platform. We support native files in the following programs:
InDesign CS • Illustrator CS • Photoshop CS • QuarkXpress 4.11 • Pagemaker 6.52 • Freehand 9.0 • Acrobat PDF’s.

  • All Photoshop files should be 300 ppi at the size to be printed and be either TIFF or EPS files. JPG’s can be sent to us but please make sure you supply the largest file size possible with NO compression (Maximum Quality). All PhotoShop files must be CMYK. Color settings should be set for US Web Coated (SWOP) with an ink density between 230% and 270%. Bitmap or lineart from Photoshop should be a minimum of 1200 ppi.

  • Illustrator files and Freehand files must have all fonts converted to outlines (Illustrator) or paths (Freehand). All colors should be CMYK process. Files should be saved as an EPS.

  • InDesign, Quark and Pagemaker files should be sent with all images, art and fonts (Collect for output or package files). All colors must be CMYK process. Do not use the type styles offered in Pagemaker or Quark as we cannot be sure that they will print properly. If you need a bold or italic font use only fonts with those styles available. If files are coming from a PC platform, please convert fonts to outlines (InDesign) or make a Hires PDF for Press. Files created in InDesign CS2 should be save as interchange (.INX) files.

  • Hi-res PDF files should be made with Acrobat Distiller using press optimized settings or custom settings (contact us for the distiller module). Files "saved" as PDF's from most programs are not as reliable as PDF's made using Acrobat Distiller. Any art supplied should follow these standards. Any artwork that we need to scan should be flat without folds, staples and should be clean of marks. We strive to produce the highest quality magazine possible. We feel that our production quality helps to keep the magazine’s longevity in the home and represents your business in the best possible manner. Our graphics team is available to help you if you or your clients have any questions or need help submitting the proper artwork. We can be reached using the contact info at the top of the page.
